Audio Recording Tools

Searching for new tools can be quite difficult, especially when so many resources come with a hefty price tag. Here’s a list of 3 free tools that allow you and your students to record audio.

Compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux, Audacity is able to record and edit multiple tracks of audio. Though easy to use for simple projects, the software includes a number of advanced options that make it useful for more proficient users. Teachers and students will appreciate the ability to copy, paste, cut, trim and delete, as well as to adjust volumes.

A class could use Audacity to record radio advertisements in any number of units. Depending on the age of the students, additional requirements could include: adding sound effects, background music, and/or sound clips from the web.

Free on newer Apple devices, both portable and desktop, Garageband offers audio and music recording options. Students are able to do simple audio recordings and mixing, trimming, cutting and deleting audio tracks. Students can also add special effects to their audio.

Garageband’s music options make it particularly well suited to music units. Students could record dialogue and music to excerpts from silent movies. For older students, discussing how the dialogue and music align with the video to reflect mood and emotion could be an additional element.

In addition to audio recording capabilities, Soundcloud allows you and your students to share your creations around the web, or privately with select people. Soundcloud can live record their audio, or submit previously captured audio. Students can record anywhere using the app.

Soundcloud has a number of uses in the language classroom. ELL students can use it to practice their oral language, recording conversations or reading. This tool can also be used for digital storytelling or for podcasting. Students can record spoken dialogue about curriculum topics, or about their own interests, which can be submitted to their blogs.
