Teachers and 21st Century Tools

As stated by the OCT standards of practice, teachers must “strive to be current in their professional knowledge and recognize its relationship to practice.” This means that teachers must continually be reflecting on their practice and looking for opportunities to incorporate new ideas and tools.

There are numerous opportunities for teachers to reach out and discover both emerging and established 21st century tools. Learning from other teachers is a practical and convenient solution to finding these tools. Social media (Twitter, blogs, Facebook, Google Plus, etc.), professional development, conferences, and other networking opportunities (e.g. Yammer) can connect teachers with ideas, resources and tools that they can integrate into their classroom.

A certain amount of trial and error may be required when trying out a new tool or resource; an ability to troubleshoot will also likely come in handy when using technology! An open mind, some perseverance, and a back up plan, are all important when it comes to using and understanding new tools. Seeking help from colleagues, whether online or in person, can help overcome any challenges.
